Social Security Backlog Reaches One Million

The biggest backlog in the government, Appeals pending at the Social Security Administration’s Office of Disablity Adjudicaiton and Review,  has now reached one million appeals according to a Audit Report completed by the Office of the Inspector General .  The average time to process claims has reacehd 450 days.  The Social Security Adminstration is strained due to an increase in the number of hearings, a lack of produciton from the adminstrative law judges, fewer attorneys on staff and fewer judges.

The SSA plans to hire more ALJ’s and conduct more pre hearings to attack the backlog.  The goal of the SSA is to have the wait peroed reduced from 450 days to 270 days by 2020.

If you or someone you know has been denied or wishes to apply for Social Security Benefits it is imperative that they speak with an attorney sooner rather than later.
